Ontario SPCA & the Staff and Volunteers of the Toronto Humane Society Re-Opens Doors for Adoption

Toronto, ON (December 31, 2009) - The Ontario SPCA and the Animal Care Staff and Volunteers of the Toronto Humane Society are pleased to announce that adoptions will re-open on a limited basis as of January 4th, 2010.

"We are working with the Animal Care Staff and providing oversight to the process of preparing animals for adoption and would like to assure the public that every animal made available for adoption will have been checked by a veterinarian and will be of an appropriate temperament for adoption. In the rare case where an animal with a medical condition is made available for adoption, the condition will be fully disclosed," said Kevin Strooband, Inspector, Ontario SPCA.

"Our investigation into allegations of animal cruelty at the Toronto Humane Society continues, however, with our oversight of the standards of care provided to animals at the River Street facility, there are approximately 50 animals ready for adoption and, with the continued extraordinary efforts of THS Animal Care Staff and Volunteers, we expect more to be available in the coming weeks," said Strooband.

The public should be aware that the Victoria Park Satellite Adoption Site of the Toronto Humane Society was not included in the Ontario SPCA's current investigation.

The Ontario SPCA continues to receive inquiries from the public as to how they can be assured that their financial donations to the Toronto Humane Society will be used to provide for animal care. The Ontario SPCA has established a trust account to support animal care at the Toronto Humane Society during the investigation. Please make your contribution at any branch of TD Canada Trust, Account Number: 5224209, Transit number: 0307.
