Toronto Humane Society search includes discovery of a dead cat hidden in the ceiling
One day after a search warrant was executed at the Toronto Humane Society, resulting in the arrests of five senior staff members, Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals investigators discovered a mummified cat in a cage hidden in the ceiling.

Search warrants executed for Toronto Humane Society in animal cruelty investigation
The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) executed search warrants for the headquarters of the Toronto Humane Society (THS) at 11 River Street, Toronto, Ontario, and one private residence. The warrants were issued in an ongoing investigation into animal cruelty at the THS. Members of the Toronto Police Service provided assistance.

The Ontario SPCA and the Toronto Humane Society attended an Animal Care Review Board of Ontario (ACRB) hearing yesterday and due to the change in legal representation at the Ontario SPCA and scheduling conflicts with both parties, the hearing has been rescheduled to October 26 – 30, 2009.

The Toronto Humane Society has no more right or authority than a private citizen to intervene on behalf of animals in distress.

The Ontario SPCA conducted an inspection at the Toronto Humane Society yesterday in response to numerous complaints regarding allegations of the unnecessary suffering of animals in care at the Toronto Humane Society. Ontario SPCA Orders regarding the Standards of Care for four animals were issued.

After an emergency meeting of the Ontario SPCA Board of Directors, the Toronto Humane Society's status as an Affiliate member has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation launched as a result of allegations brought forth in a series of Globe and Mail articles. The investigation is ongoing.

Prompted by a three part Globe and Mail investigative series that began Saturday, May 30, 2009, the Ontario SPCA will be investigating allegations of inappropriate conduct at the Toronto Humane Society. The article entitled "Killing Them with Kindness" alleges that the Toronto Humane Society is permitting the unnecessary suffering of animals with a restrictive euthanasia policy.
